Fly Away - Episode Two

EPISODE 2

SCENE 1 OUTSIDE WORKPLACE

(KEVIN holds an umbrella over ZOEY’S head.)

KEVIN: You okay?

(Female turns her head.)

ZOEY: *Sniff.* It doesn’t matter.

KEVIN: What’s wrong?

ZOEY: (pauses.) I don’t want to talk about it.

KEVIN: I don’t know what you’re going through, but you’ll catch a
cold if you stay out here. (Helps her up.) C’mon, let’s get you out
of his rain.

(CAMERA ZOOMS IN ON KEVIN’S POCKETS WHILE HE IS GOING
TOWARDS CAFE.)

MIKE: You there?... Are you outside? What’s that noise? (Hears
rain and him conversating.) You talking to a girl?... Nice...(That’s my boy!)

(SCREEN FADES.)

SCENE 2 CAFE

(GOES TO A NEARBY CAFÉ.)

(CAMERA ON WHERE ZOEY IS SITTING. WHILE WAITING, ZOEY GETS A
TEXT FROM HER AUNT. ACTORS / CAMERA.)

(KEVIN comes in with 2 drinks and takes a seat.)

ZOEY: I don’t drink coffee.

KEVIN: Oh! No. I got you some hot chocolate. (milk) (Awkward
Silence.) So.... Where you from?

Zoey: ...(She hesitates before accepting the cup. She sits with
it, but doesn’t drink.)...

KEVIN: (pauses upon unexpected silence.) The hot chocolate should
keep you warm. (pauses again) What were you doing in the rain any way?

(Silence. Two beats.)

Zoey: Have you ever been in love?

KEVIN: (Thinks for a moment.) I’ve never dated before, so I can’t
really say. I believe in love at first sight, but I also believe that it takes time for mutual feelings to build. I don’t know. Maybe I’m just hoping one day, I can find my happily ever after.

Zoey: Happily ever after? (Stares at cup.) There’s no such thing (as
happily ever after). (hopeless vs bitter.)

KEVIN: Why not?

ZOEY: Stuff like that only happens in fairy tales.

KEVIN: What makes you think they only happen in fairy tales?

ZOEY: ... I don’t want to talk about it.

KEVIN: (pauses.) Listen. I really don’t like seeing girls depressed.
(Beat...) How about this? We’ll play a game, if you win, I’ll leave, but if I win, I want to see you smile. Deal?

ZOEY: (Looks up at his hand, back down at the cup, and then looks
back up at his hand.) (Hesitant at first, but surprising she slowly
nods.)

KEVIN: Let me see your hand. (pause.) Now close your eyes.
(Kevin raises out his right hand.) (Zoey slowly gives out
her left hand.) (Kevin puts his left hand on top of Zoey’s
left hand.)

ZOEY:(Zoey closes her eyes.)(Kevin turns her hand with his left hand.)

KEVIN: I’m about to put something into your hand.

(Kevin slides out left hand and pulls out a turtle toy and
puts it on top of her left hand. He has a pair of these
turtle toys.)

KEVIN: Now, I want you to guess what it is.
(KEVIN slowly lets go of her hand. ZOEY feels a rubbery,
squishy, stress ball)

ZOEY: I don’t know... A mushroom?

KEVIN: Why don’t you open your eyes and tell me.

ZOEY: (Opens her eyes and sees the turtle and gives a relaxed smile
with a partial laugh.) (She holds it up to look at it.)

KEVIN: You should smile more, it really suits you.

ZOEY: (Looks up at him.) Thanks... (Looks down to the turtle, maybe
slight blush.)

(BACKGROUND MUSIC BEGINS PLAYING WHILE THEY
CONVERSATE.)(AFTER AWHILE MUSIC FADES.)

KEVIN: So... Do you have a ride?

ZOEY: Yeah, my aunt. (Gets a text that aunt has arrived) That’s her
now...

KEVIN: I’ll walk you out.

(CAMERA / ACTOR.)

(BOTH OF THEM EXIT THE CAFE.)

SCENE 3 OUTSIDE THE CAFE

KEVIN: Here take this. (Hands umbrella.)

ZOEY: (ZOEY hands the turtle back.)

KEVIN: Keep it.

ZOEY: You know... You’re a really nice guy. Any girl would be lucky
to have you. (Smiles and walks off to the car.)

(CAMERA IS FOCUSED ON KEVIN WATCHING ZOEY LEAVE. (SCREEN FADES.)

SCENE 4 KEVIN’S WORKPLACE
